Course Description

This two-day workshop provides 12 total hours (6 per day) of Introductory training for DPH's HIV / AIDS program planning, implementation, and evaluation that are seeking more information about how to foster their programs or their organization's cultural competence will benefit from the following. Cultural competency is a continuous learning process. This training intends to provide a foundation upon which other cultural information and trainings can be built and will address some key concept areas of cultural competency awareness, knowledge and skills needed to further cultural competency.

Course Goal

The goal of this workshop is to improve HIV Care and Prevention provider awareness and knowledge of cultural competency strategies in order to improve services and engage clients into care and prevention services.

Course Objectives

At the end of this training, participants will be able to:
  • Define cultural competency
  • Describe introductory multicultural competency principles and theories in a context working with diverse clients living with HIV / AIDS.
  • How to apply cultural competency principles and theories to one's thinking and practice with diverse groups in Connecticut.
  • How to apply principles to help your program systematically plan for cultural competency.
  • How to create personal action plans for continued personal and professional development.
